AAPIC and UMass Boston Institute for Asian American Studies Survey

The Massachusetts Asian American and Pacific Islander community is broad and deeply diverse, yet current polls and surveys give limited information about the differences within the AAPI community. The AAPI Commission has long advocated for data disaggregation, and this survey, with the Institute of Asian American Studies at UMass Boston, will be an important step towards data equity and more knowledge about the Massachusetts AAPI community. The AAPIC is proud to work with our incredible local public universities.

.

The Institute for Asian American Studies at UMass Boston conducts community-based research on Asian American issues; provides data and education about Asian Americans to policymakers, service providers, educators and students, foundations, the media and community groups; and contributes to the success of Asian American students and the enrichment of Asian American studies on campus. The survey will focus solely on AAPI communities, and would supplement Census and American Community Survey data which cannot be made localized. In addition to demographic questions, respondents will be asked about their experiences and opinions on housing, immigration, health, sense of belonging, climate change, and more. The survey will be conducted by an external polling firm, and will consist of 35-40 multiple-choice questions posed to 1,000 respondents. To our knowledge, there has not been a state-wide AAPI survey of this type in Massachusetts.

A report will be created with the data collected from the survey to be published widely and accessible to organizations, governments, and the public. The data and subsequent report will be used to advocate for the needs of AAPI communities in Massachusetts, highlight the diversity of the Massachusetts AAPI community, and academic research.
