Western Massachusetts

In October 2022, AAPI community organizations and associations local to Western Massachusetts gathered in Springfield in the interest of expanding the AAPI Commission’s reach in Western Massachusetts. After the success of the initial listening session, where the needs, events, and resources of the surrounding communities were identified and uplifted, the Western Massachusetts branch of the AAPIC officially established a recurring quarterly listening session, starting in March of 2023.

In addition to the quarterly meetings, Commissioners, staff, and interns attend events held by other AAPI organizations both to do outreach and education about the Commission, as well as support the groups uplifting AAPI voices in Western Massachusetts.

Though large AAPI communities exist in both Worcester and Springfield, they previously were underrepresented in the Commission. The listening sessions have provided the first step toward fixing this gap, and have already begun to foster meaningful dialogue between community groups.

Untold Stories of Bhutanese in Western Massachusetts: An Oral History Project

From March to May 2025, the AAPI Commission proudly partnered with the Bhutanese Society of Western Massachusetts to host three community screenings of Untold Stories of Bhutanese Living in Western MA, a powerful documentary that sheds light on the forced displacement of over 100,000 ethnic Nepali Bhutanese in the late 20th century.

Through deeply personal narratives and historical context, the film highlights a history of political oppression and human rights violations that led many to be resettled in Western Massachusetts.

The first screening was held in Springfield, MA, with approximately 100 attendees who were all members of the Bhutanese Society of Western MA.
The second screening, also held in Springfield, MA, brought together approximately 30 attendees, including Asian American community members, stakeholders, academics, and students from Western Massachusetts.

Led by Hari Khanal with more than five years in the making, the documentary captures the voices of local Bhutanese community members as they share stories of struggle, resilience, and cultural preservation while forging new lives in an unfamiliar land.

Each of the three screening events started with a shared meal, a screening of the documentary, followed by a thoughtful Q&A and community dialogue that fostered reflection and connection.

The third screening, held in Boston, MA, gathered approximately 20 attendees from Asian American and Pacific Islander communities and stakeholders from the Boston area.
Presented by the Bhutanese Society of Western Massachusetts with support from UMass Amherst, Mass Humanities, and the AAPI Commission.

Participants highlighted the importance of cultural preservation, youth engagement, and cross-community collaboration, while also voicing serious concerns about immigration enforcement, community safety, mental health needs, and unequal representation compared to Boston. The meeting brought renewed calls for increased staffing—particularly more hours for the Western Mass Regional Coordinator—a dedicated physical office space, and better systems for outreach, translation, and funding access. Community members emphasized the need for stronger infrastructure, more frequent and flexible meetings, and deeper engagement from the Commission to support grassroots efforts and take meaningful action on the issues most affecting Western Massachusetts.

March 2024 Quarterly Meeting

The March 2024 Western Mass Quarterly Meeting included updates about the many events that had happened and were coming up throughout Western Massachusetts. Additionally, members talked about how to improve future community events, and what would be helpful to see from a Western Massachusetts Advisory Committee.
