The AAPIC Youth Council prepares the next generation of AAPI leaders by equipping high school students with the knowledge, skills, and relationships to make a meaningful difference in their communities. Through leadership development, civic engagement, advocacy training, and partnerships with community organizations and public officials, students turn their lived experiences into projects that strengthen communities across Massachusetts.

Youth Voices: What the AAPIC Youth Council Means to Members

Hear directly from Youth Council members as they reflect on their leadership journeys, the community projects they developed, and how the program helped them grow as advocates and changemakers.

From Ideas to Impact

Each year, Youth Council members identify challenges affecting their communities and develop projects in partnership with schools, nonprofits, healthcare providers, libraries, and other organizations to create meaningful change.  Recent projects have explored issues such as:
  • AAPI representation and education
  • Community history preservation and storytelling
  • Mental health and wellness
  • Healthcare and community resources
  • Civic engagement and public participation
Through research, collaboration, and community engagement, students gain experience identifying community needs, developing solutions, and sharing their findings and perspectives with decision-makers.

Building the Next Generation of AAPI Leaders

The Youth Council helps students recognize that their lived experiences, perspectives, and ideas are valuable forms of leadership. Students learn how their voices can contribute to conversations about their schools, communities, and the future of Massachusetts. Throughout the program, students develop practical leadership experience while building relationships with peers, mentors, community organizations, and public officials. Many participants leave the program with a stronger sense of civic responsibility and a continued commitment to serving their communities.

Youth Council Impact

2025–2026 Highlights

  • 14 student-led community projects
  • Partnerships with schools, libraries, healthcare providers, nonprofits, and local organizations
  • Presentations to school committees, legislators, legislative staff, and Commissioners
  • Projects addressing education, mental health, healthcare, storytelling, civic engagement, and belonging

The Youth Council gave me the opportunity to create a project around an issue I'm passionate about. What starts as one project can grow into something much larger that benefits our wider community.

The Youth Council was my foot in the door for advocacy. … Everybody on the Youth Council has had such a big direct impact on the communities we are acknowledging and representing.

2025–2026 AAPIC Youth Council Member

One of the most anticipated highlights of the Youth Council program is the Annual Asian Caucus State House Visit. During this special event, Youth Council members tour the Massachusetts State House and learn about the history and workings of the state legislature.

These visits also provide a powerful platform for dialogue. Youth Council members engage directly with Asian Caucus legislators, discussing pathways to civic engagement, challenges facing AAPI youth, and strategies for building a more equitable future.

The Commission is deeply grateful to the Asian Caucus and the Massachusetts Legislature for welcoming our Youth Council into the halls of power—and for inspiring the next generation of AAPI leaders.

The Youth Council continues to evolve each year as students identify new priorities, develop innovative projects, and strengthen partnerships across Massachusetts. Explore previous cohorts, showcases, and program highlights below.

Program History

The AAPIC Youth Council was established in response to concerns raised by AAPI students across Massachusetts, including experiences of discrimination, cultural isolation, and limited opportunities for civic engagement. Since its founding, the program has evolved to provide students with meaningful leadership experiences rooted in community service, advocacy, and civic participation.

Originally structured on a calendar year, the program shifted to a school-year model in 2023 to better align with students’ academic schedules. Since its founding, the Youth Council has received over 100 applications from young leaders eager to make a difference.

In recent years, AAPIC has expanded the Youth Council’s emphasis on civic engagement, empowering students to develop community-based projects that address issues they identify through their own lived experiences.
